The thick end of the reed should be on the bottom, and the tip of the reed should line up with the top of the mouthpiece. If you turn around the mouth piece you shouldn't see any part of the reed sticking up over the top. If you don't know how to hold it or put it together, or the basics in general I wouldn't play it if I were you.......
